Irish Solicitors in London: Thinking of Coming Home?

London has been an important career destination for Irish solicitors for many years. But for those considering a move home, the question is whether the right opportunity is waiting in Ireland.

Returning to Dublin or another Irish city does not have to mean putting an international legal career on hold. Experience gained in the UK can be valuable to Irish firms advising sophisticated domestic and international clients.

What could a move home offer?

It depends on the lawyer and the role. Some solicitors want to be closer to family. Others are looking for more client contact, a broader practice, a different working environment or a long-term route to partnership.

For lawyers who have worked on complex transactions, disputes or regulatory matters in London, opportunities may arise in Irish practices covering corporate law, finance, funds, competition, technology, litigation, construction and energy.

The key is finding a position that builds on your existing experience, rather than simply taking the first available job back home.

Look beyond the salary

London salaries can be difficult to match, particularly at international and US firms. Any comparison should therefore consider the full package: base pay, bonus, pension, working hours, commuting and housing costs.

Equally important are the files you will handle, the people you will work with and the opportunities for progression. A higher salary is valuable, but it is not the only measure of a successful career move.

You don’t have to be actively looking

Many Irish solicitors working in London are happy in their present roles but would consider returning if the right position arose. A confidential conversation can help establish whether there is genuine demand for your particular experience and what salary or seniority might be realistic.

If you are admitted as a solicitor in Ireland, check the current practising certificate requirements before returning to practice. Lawyers qualified only in another jurisdiction should confirm the relevant admission requirements with the Law Society of Ireland.

Considering Ireland in 2027?

Before making a decision, think carefully about the work you want to do, the team you want to join and where you would like your career to be in three years’ time. A well-chosen move home can be an important next step, not a compromise.
